The Salt Water Effect

In the summertime you may have noticed that your skin is literally glowing and that your hair has these natural gorgeous beach waves. If you haven't we will share some tips below on how to get that effect.

The Science

So why do we glow after a beach day or throughout the summer?

Sea salt and blood plasma are basically composed of the same exact compounds in terms of minerals and elements. Knowing this the following effects are observed:

Helps detox the skin, reduce swelling, inflammation and treat wounds

The ocean water contains Magnesium which acts as an anti inflammatory and antimicrobial

It also contains calcium and potassium which help the body to absorb toxins body and promote the healing process

Another important mineral the salt water contains is, sulfur which is a natural antiseptic

Note: a lot of these minerals are used in beauty products but here you get it straight from the source and without any added cost

The water acts as a natural exfoliant by helping get rid of dead skin and promote healthy skin cell production

The effect of the minerals help open pores allowing for an extra deep clean

They also help with exfoliation and stimulating blood flow to help serums or moisturizers become easily absorbed into the skin

The water opens up your pores, soaks up excess oils leading to moisture retention, diminishes scars, fights off acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation

Note: Be careful if you already have dry skin and make sure to always use a good serum like hyaluronic acid as well as a good moisturizer after. Don’t forget that ocean water is good for your hair giving you those magical summer waves but of course in moderation due to the dryness

Personal Experience

As briefly mentioned we personally use salt water to our advantage during the summer time. Our families use the sand as a skin exfoliator and the salt water for any acne or abrasions. It is a part of our culture and has been passed down for generations.

What to do? Take 2 tablespoons of sea salt add it to 1/2 a bottle of water and shake it. This will give you a similar effect if you can't get to the ocean. Otherwise, next time you're at the beach bring a water bottle with you and get some straight from the source.

You can make a bath with the ocean water, spray it on your face or hair, or even double it as a toner. (The opportunities are ENDLESS.)
